DJI released the original version of the Mavic Air back in 2018. It didn’t take long for the affordable drone to become extremely popular and understandably so. The Air brought the best features of the Mavic series to an ultra-portable and foldable device. It was a boon for drone photography beginners, who got to take advantage of high-end flight performance and everything else DJI is known for, in a far cheaper package. More than two years after the Mavic Air’s release, it looks like DJI Is all set to release a successor, in the form of the aptly named Mavic Air 2.

DJI has scheduled an event for Monday, April 27th at 9:30PM ET, which might be the unveiling of the all-new Mavic Air 2. Here is the DJI’s event teaser on Twitter earlier this week:

Adding credence to this rumor, some images of the Mavic Air 2 were leaked by Brazilian drone site DroneFriendly. If it wasn’t enough of a giveaway, you’ll see the Mavic Air 2 name on the arm of the drone.

Camera

The new DJI Mavic Air 2 will likely feature a fully stabilized three-axis gimbal camera that captures 4K videos and shoots 48MP photos. The leaked photos don’t show the camera and gimbal very clearly, unfortunately. However, given that DJI’s drones are known for their camera prowess, things should only get better with the Air 2.

Controller

It’s pretty evident that the Air 2 will have a new controller with a drastically different design. The new controller looks like it’ll be much bigger. You will also be able to place your phone above the controller this time around instead of below it. A toggle lets you switch between Normal, Sport, and Tripod modes. Staying the same is the return-to-home button, the function button, and battery status lights.

DJI Mavic Air 2 battery life

The expected battery life of a drone depends on the drone’s weight and design. The original has a capacity of 2,375mAH against a takeoff weight of 430grams, which gives it a battery life of 21 minutes. Looking at the leaked specifications of DJI Mavic Air 2, we can expect the battery life of the new drone to be an impressive 34 minutes. That’s a significant increase over the original version all because of the great new design.

OcuSync 2.0

The Mavic Air 2 will use OcuSync 2.0. It’s a DJI feature that bypasses the interference problems seen with Wi-Fi-based controllers. With automatic dual-frequency band switching, the Mavic Air 2 will have a more stable and reliable flight. This will also allow it to transmit high-resolution videos over long distances without worrying about the interference common in urban areas and crowded areas.

This also means there might be support for the DJI smart controller which works exclusively with OcuSync. It’s fantastic to see DJI bring more high-end features to a consumer-level drone and is certainly going to be a huge selling point for the Air 2.

Stay tuned for more information about the Mavic Air 2 launch as we get closer to the release date.
